When Carrie contacted me about a newborn session for the baby girl she was expecting, I first thought she had been referred to me as a birth client.  As it turns out, Hannah came into the world “fast and furious” (in her mother’s words :)) after less than four hours of labor and less than twenty minutes at the hospital! It was a joy to meet this wonderful family as the welcomed their newest addition.  Big sister Aubrey is the same age that Merit was when Eliot was born, so this session tugged at my heartstrings a little bit.  Time goes so fast. Hannah will be following Aubrey around in the blink of an eye. But until then, I hope this foursome enjoys these days.  They are precious and fleeting.

Wonderful things happen when you follow your passion. When I was pregnant for the first time, I never realized that I would become such an advocate for women, mothers, and babies, for breastfeeding, birth, and respectful care. When I moved to Gainesville, I knew this was where I was going to be putting down roots and eventually building my business, so I started to get plugged in with the birth community. This is how I met my lovely friend Mary. She shares my passion and is a doula here in town. Any mother who has Mary at her birth should consider herself extremely lucky because Mary is one of the kindest, most patient, and most nurturing souls I know.

As it turns out, Mary and Geoff have two little girls, Smith & Hudson, who are very close in age to my boys. It has been a joy watching our kids play together and become friends, so my heart was full when Mary asked me to document her sweet family. Here are some frames from a morning at home with the Ficeks.

It was by pure serendipity that I was able to photograph Manuel’s birth on September 19. His parents, Justina and Manny, are wonderful friends of mine, but they live about two hours away, so I wasn’t sure if birth photos would be in the picture (see what I did there? ;)). The day before little Manny was born, Justina and I and our group of girlfriends were all having a live chat session while she was at the hospital. Her water had broken the day before and she and Manny were patiently waiting for labor to pick up and for their baby’s arrival. Fortunately, this gave me enough time to pack up my own kiddos and make it down to Orlando to capture everything for them! They did not know whether they were having a girl or a boy, so my favorite sequence of photos is Manny’s face when he realizes they are having a son.

Welcome Earthside, Manuel Amado. We’re so happy that you’re here!

I know that the photos I take are a way of freezing time. Probably because I am a nursing mother myself, the photos that crash over me with the biggest wave of emotion are my breastfeeding photos. Once mothers receive these images, I get the most kind, genuine messages thanking me for preserving this time in their life and the life of their baby. They are doing an amazing thing, after all, feeding, nourishing, and comforting their little ones. They realize that, in this capacity, they are powerful. No one else will do. For the duration of a breastfeeding relationship, your baby wants and needs you.

I take part in a global effort to normalize breastfeeding in public, called the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project. I was driven to participate in this project as I feel my own nursing days slipping by one by one. Some of my fondest memories of my sons are sitting with them, cradled in my arms, off in some delightful dreamland, suckling at my breast. I’ve been told that they’ll never learn to fall asleep on their own (not true, they eventually do). I’ve read that I’m spoiling them, or that, in my two-year-old’s case, he’s too old. I could cite sources about the numerous benefits of breastfeeding (even for toddlers), but I won’t. I want this post to be about the feelings involved in breastfeeding, not the facts. I will mourn the day that my sons stop nursing. But I know it will be our choice, on our time, and therefore the right time.

Every mother has the right to have as long of a breastfeeding relationship with her baby as is mutually desirable. Unfortunately, one obstacle to achieving this is the sexualization and stigma that women face for breastfeeding in public. Breastfeeding does not occur on a schedule — it occurs on demand, and as such, women do have to feed their nurslings in public. So, please, enjoy these images from the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project. Pin them, share them around. The more we see it, the more normal it becomes. And, as a result, more mothers and babies will be able to cherish long, healthy nursing relationships.

Here it is!  My new website.  Thanks for stopping by!

When I started this photography journey, I thought I would just be doing it on the side temporarily while I finished up graduate school.  But it turns out that I really love it and didn’t want to give it up.  I suppose this website and the time and energy I’ve invested in it is my first step towards really doing this thing.  So, hold me accountable.  Follow along.  Take a look around. I’m glad you’re here!

xo, Kristin
